Feng Xiao-Min: Brush of Light

During the month of May 2024, Opera Gallery Hong Kong presents Feng Xiao-Min: Brush of Light. An exhibition of luminous abstract landscapes, Brush of Light features shimmering scenes painted by French-Chinese artist Feng Xiao-Min that capture the tranquil moments when light appears the most hopeful. Combining calligraphic brushstrokes with Western painting techniques, his paintings are harmonious and controlled. The balanced use of colour and line reveals a mastery of form. A friend of the legendary Zao Wou-Ki, Feng Xiao-Min creates canvases which are enigmatic yet universally appealing.

Feng Xiao-Min

Born 1959 in Shanghai, Feng Xiao-Min is a French-Chinese artist. After graduating from Fine Arts studies in China, he moved to France in 1988 and enrolled at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Feng was later invited to teach at the same prestigious institution from 1997 to 2000. Afterwards, he decided to give up teaching to focus entirely on his own creations. He currently lives and works in Paris.

Feng's work celebrates the fusion of Eastern aesthetics and Western techniques depicting his visions of landscapes from dusk to dawn. No specific subject or location inspires Feng; instead he focuses on the powerful visual effect produced by the blending of colour and the spatial configuration of the whole image. Taking inspiration from his training in traditional Chinese calligraphy, Feng uses acrylic on canvas and skillfully mimics the Chinese aesthetic of ink on paper, often being known to paint on the floor to control acrylic and water flow.

Today, Feng's artworks are collected and presented in various private and public collections, including galleries, museums and foundations, in France and abroad. Feng frequently exhibits at international art fairs and biennales and was commissioned to produce work for the 2017 BRICS summit.
